Together with four other innovators, Sit & Heat is in the finals of The Philips Innovation Award. Every year, the organisation awards a prize to the most innovative student start-up. On 24 May, the innovators will compete for the grand prize of €50,000 in the new Luxor Theatre in Rotterdam.

The organisation

The Philips Innovation Award is a platform where participants are guided by experts with an eye on sustainable and valuable ideas. Participation provides access to a large network of other ambitious entrepreneurs and professionals from various companies.

The final

More than 300 teams applied for The Philips Innovation Award this year. In the semi-finals, 30 innovators pitched, after which five finalists were chosen. Sit & Heat is one of the finalists. "My biggest dream is to supply half the world with Sit & Heat, the cold part. Too much heat is currently lost to the outside air," Jorg Rijkschroeff said.

In 1982, Prisca and Remco Vaartstra's parents started one of the first Delifrances in the Netherlands. They were right in the centre of Utrecht among the shops. There, brother and sister watched their parents give their own interpretation to the now widespread franchise formula. From 1998, Prisca and Remco took the reins themselves. As a franchise business, they naturally had to deal with various regulations, but they were also given a lot of room for their own input. Thus, Prisca and Remco now have soups on the menu that their mother (now 77 years old) still makes herself!

Working together for hospitality

"It was all going very well... But as an entrepreneur, you always want to be challenged," Prisca says. "That's why we started a second Delifrance in Veenendaal in 2005". After a few years, they opted for one business again after all. "We can't do without each other," says Prisca. "We complement each other too well for that". They saw the most future in Delifrance Veenendaal and continued there together. With success! In 2012, the business was ranked 3rd most hospitable Delifrance in the Netherlands. "Until now, we have also been in the top 10 every year," says Prisca. "We do consider that a very big compliment".
"People just order a second cup of coffee"

Offering extra comfort

Prisca and Remco let that hospitality be reflected in as many things as possible. Sit & Heat makes a modest contribution with heated cushions on the outdoor terrace. "Sit & Heat is still quite unique, I like that," says Prisca. In Veenendaal, Prisca and Remco are the first with Sit & Heat cushions on the terrace. "This year we are 10 years old, so we have something to celebrate and like to offer our guests extra comfort. The reactions from our guests are very positive. People are so comfortable, they just order a second cup of coffee and of course that's what we do it for!"

We would like to thank you for all the positive feedback! A nice boost to ensure that you can enjoy Sit & Heat on more and more terraces.

Our website has been revamped!

On our new website, a catering entrepreneur can immediately calculate what he or she can save compared to other terrace heating. Meanwhile, the Sit & Heat heated cushions can be found at various catering entrepreneurs. The map on the website shows where these Sit & Heat terraces are located. Some of these catering entrepreneurs have shared their story on our website. Who are they? How does Sit & Heat increase turnover? Why do people keep talking about it?

Together with Soullmate, we are at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile: Milan's design week and the largest interior design fair in the world. We are part of Tuttobene; where Dutch designers present their work.

Collaboration between Soullmate and Sit & Heat

Two innovative designs that fit together like no other. The cocreation makes a comfortable experience of dining in open space. Sitting in the Soullmate Dining Unit with the warmth of the Sit & Heat cushions lets you experience how special any park, square, meadow or vacant property can be. With the cubic box-based Field Kitchen, Design Studio BOMM connects people with food in open space and Sit & Heat provides comfort and warmth in a socially responsible way with its cushions. The passion, that drive to place beautiful projects in open space brings Soullmate and Sit & Heat together.

The fair opens tomorrow, 9 April and it closes on 14 April. We would like to invite you to come and have a look. We can be found at Via Tortona 31. For those not in the area but curious: take a look at www.sitandheat.com or www.soullmate.com

At the age of 21, Anouk Veen opened her own catering business in Grave; Lunchroom Sabor. She soon knew that hospitality was 'her thing'. She spent evenings brainstorming the interior of the lunchroom. Now it stands. Completely conceived and decorated by herself. Young and fresh, which certainly makes it stand out among all the brown cafés in Grave. But she also surprises both tourists and residents in the village with her well-made coffee.

You stand out in everything

Sit & Heat's cushions are a great addition to this innovative concept. In Grave, Sabor is the first catering establishment to use this modern version of the old-fashioned terrace heaters. The lunchroom has only been open since March, so they have not yet experienced a winter. Nevertheless, the cushions have already been used many times and she gets a lot of positive feedback. "People now ask on arrival if we want to put them back on" says Anouk. "If you want to stay open a bit longer in the evening, those cushions are really ideal".
"I was shocked by the consumption of other patio heaters"

All ready for winter

Because Sabor is small inside, Anouk sees Sit & Heat as an extension of the number of seats. "I will soon create 6 extra seats with it in winter," Anouk points out. The quick calculator realises that this already gives her a partial return on her investment. Even more important to her, however, was the consumption "I was shocked by the consumption costs of other patio heaters," she explains. "Together with the uniqueness of these cushions, reason enough to choose this."

By installing Sit & Heat seat heating on some stadium seats in the Business Club last weekend, PSV had an international first. The Business Club members were literally kept warm while enjoying the fantastic PSV - ADO Den Haag match.

The test with Sit & Heat at PSV was partly made possible by the Sustainable Eindhoven Foundation. Currently, heaters in the Philips Stadium hang from the roof, causing a lot of heat to be lost. Through the tests with Sit & Heat, PSV offers their Business members a little extra. Among other things, they can determine themselves how cold or warm they adjust their seats.

The heated cushions, which were tested on four Business Seats last Saturday, were developed by Sit & Heat. Sit & Heat developed heat cushions as an answer to energy-inefficient and uncomfortable heaters. The heat pads save 95% of energy as the heat does not have to travel any distance to the users. The energy is thus no longer lost to the outside air. Moreover, Sit & Heat seat heaters increase comfort by heating the users' bodies and the heat can be individually controlled.

For companies, the Sit & Heat seat heating is a great way to differentiate themselves from other sponsors. They can offer more comfort and show through a logo on the cushions that they have seats in the stadium. Ronald Kooistra, Manager Commercial Affairs, Service and Events: "Hospitality is a high priority for us. In winter days, that includes heated seating. Through this trial with Sit & Heat, we are looking at how we can provide our Business members, and in the future also supporters, with every convenience during matches."

Last weekend, users were also delighted with the comfortable and warm chairs. Hennie Maas of Maas im- export b.v.: "To my surprise, we had the Sit & Heat on trial. It worked so well that I could even take off my jacket. So my opinion is: Do it!".

Stichting Duurzaam Eindhoven and Sit & Heat hope that, after this successful trial, the cooperation with Philips Stadium can be continued and that more stadiums will see the benefit of seat heating so that the era of energy-inefficient heaters will come to an end.

Pieter van Soest is a true hospitality enthusiast, with a great passion for speciality beers. For 40 years, from bartender before, to now...owner of his own pub 'De Kroon'. Above all, Pieter loves tracking down and discovering new beers. "Recently I found another, for me, new kind of pilsner: a German one called 'Augustiner Edelstoff'. My new personal favourite," he says enthusiastically.

Extra service for guests of Café de Kroon

Pieter is also enthusiastic about Sit & Heat. Café de Kroon is a brown pub, with many regulars and local residents who drop by. "The more than 100 different beers, the quizzes and especially the cosiness, that's what people come back for," says Pieter. "I have therefore taken Sit & Heat as an extra service to my guests".
"I often hear: hey too bad, they are already taken"

More sales in winter

Reactions to Sit & Heat have been very positive, according to Pieter. "Many people don't know about it, which is why they keep talking about it. 'Huh too bad, they are already taken,' Pieter regularly hears. "Apart from the extra service to my customers, I naturally hope to get more sales from it on cold days".Alex Verburg's greatest passions are making good food and enjoying it. Besides being a chef, he is also an entrepreneur and owner of Restaurant Gusto. He opened his first restaurant in Rotterdam 15 years ago. This restaurant was soon nicknamed 'The Italian of Rotterdam', which reflected the high appreciation of guests. The restaurant was always full, so he opened his second restaurant around the corner. The key ingredients: fresh produce and a passionate team. "A large part of my team has been working with us since the opening," Alex says proudly.

Sustainability first

Alex has been following Sit & Heat for several years. He saw it on the news and was immediately excited. Because sustainability is paramount at all his restaurants. "Not only are our ingredients sustainable, Gusto itself also tries to pay close attention to this in every aspect." Examples include the energy-efficient refrigerated workbenches and the heat recovery system. Naturally, Sit & Heat's sustainable system for terrace heating cannot be missing.
"Delicious, where can I buy this?"

You experience the benefits immediately

"The reactions to Sit & Heat are nice, guests are surprised by the pleasant warmth," says entrepreneur and chef Alex. The cushions are currently too short in use to know how many of the guests come back because of Sit & Heat. For Alex, however, the added value is already clear. Italian restaurant Gusto was the first of the three business with Sit & Heat. "My other business will definitely follow!"."The shed at the back of the garden...that's where it all started," says hospitality entrepreneur Ayhan, laughing. Together with two friends, he started 'Club HAC', a kind of precursor to today's beer joint. "We were about 15 years old and wanted to earn some extra money with some alcohol and a chip pan. At first just for some friends, but soon we didn't even know half the visitors ourselves. After a year or two, we had to stop. It got busier in our garden than in the local pub... and we had no toilet".

Meaningful for everyone

It did not stop at the shed in the garden. Ayhan now has nine catering businesses, including Tapasbar Tapamor. A true entrepreneur who sees a challenge in opening new business. "Whether someone wants tapas, a night out or getting married, I like it when I, together with my partners and staff, can do something for everyone." This certainly applies to his business Tapamor, where he has had two benches with the heated Sit & Heat cushions on them since April.
"You want to give people the idea that they are on holiday"

It's all about the total experience at Tapamor

Tapamor is a Spanish tapas restaurant, where cosiness is paramount. Sit & Heat's cushions also play a part in this. Ayhan and his manager Avalon both agree; "The best compliment is when people feel like they have been on holiday here. When you hear that, it means your guests are purely relaxed and really enjoyed themselves. That's the best thing you can give someone. Every detail can contribute to that".

Everyone talks about it

"Last summer, we were quite busy with Tapamor's terrace. That worked tremendously. The terrace has been brightened up with fun stuff, including Sit & Heat, which attracts a huge number of people," Avalon points out. "It's so innovative, our guests keep talking about it. That's not only good for the cushions, but also definitely good for us!" says Ayhan. "Especially with the colder days, the benches with Sit & Heat are the spots that are occupied first."
